Ticks
Ticks make dogs sick, give kids nasty bites, and hide in the parts of the yard nobody walks through every day. Top End conditions favour them, especially through the build-up. Treating the yard properly is the difference between a tick-aware household and a household with a vet bill.
Identification
What Ticks Look Like
Ticks feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals: cats, dogs, possums, echidnas, bandicoots, and humans. A tick infestation in the yard is mostly an animal-host problem first and a household problem second.
Unfed
Small, flat, oval, dark brown to reddish-brown. Hard to spot in fur or on skin until you look.
Engorged after feeding
Swollen, grey-blue or grey-green, the size of a small bean. Easier to see; harder to ignore.
Six legs (larvae) or eight legs (nymphs and adults)
Different life stages can look very different in size and colour, but the feeding behaviour is the same.
Warning Signs
Signs of Tick Activity
Brown Dog Ticks are most active in the Northern Territory through the build-up, the hot, humid pre-wet-season window when conditions are perfect for them. They thrive in thick vegetation, palm fronds, leaf litter, and garden mulch. Yards with overgrown corners, dense shrubs, or unmowed back fences are where most Darwin tick activity hides.
Ticks on pets
Run hands through fur regularly, especially around ears, neck, between toes, and under the belly. Pets that have been in long grass need a check.
Pet symptoms
Lethargy, loss of coordination, vomiting, weakness, breathing changes; these can indicate paralysis tick exposure and are a vet emergency.
Bites on people, especially kids
Often on legs, ankles, behind ears, scalp.
Wildlife visiting the yard
Possums, bandicoots, and feral cats bring ticks in from outside.
Action Plan
What to Do If You Find a Tick
Remove it carefully
For pets, vet advice is to use a tick-removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers and pull straight out. Don’t squeeze the body. If your pet shows any symptoms (weakness, vomiting, paralysis), get to the vet immediately even if you have removed the tick.
Check the rest of the household
If one tick is in the house, more are usually nearby; check pets, kids, and adults.
Treat the yard
We target tick harbourage: garden beds, mulched areas, long grass, palm fronds, fence lines, and shaded corners.
