Pest Profile

Spiders

Most spiders in and around Darwin homes are harmless. That doesn’t make them less unsettling when there’s webbing across every verandah corner and a new resident over the bathroom door. Wet-season conditions push spiders indoors, and the result is a property that suddenly feels less like home. Spider treatment cuts the webbing pressure right back without turning the place upside down.

Spider Species

Common Top End Spiders

Australia has a wide range of spider species, and the Top End sees a strong cross-section. Most are harmless to humans. The species we treat in Darwin homes are largely webbing spiders, the ones that build sheet webs, orb webs, and corner webs across eaves, verandahs, window screens, and balcony fixtures.

Webbing spiders

(Common Type Daddy Long Legs) The category we treat most often. Build webs across eaves, balcony rails, window frames, security screens, garden shrubs, and verandah ceilings. Mostly nuisance, not danger.

Garden orb weavers

Build large round webs between trees, shrubs, and outdoor fixtures. Body is plump, legs are long. Usually outdoor only.

Huntsman spiders

Large, fast, flat-bodied. They look alarming and don’t build webs. Mostly harmless and helpful (they eat other insects), though many people understandably do not want them inside.

Mouse spiders, jumping spiders

Common around Darwin properties.

Warning Signs

Signs of Spider Activity

Wet-season weather drives spiders indoors. When the rain hits, they move from gardens and outdoor structures into warm, dry, sheltered parts of the house. That is why most Darwin spider calls come in over the wet season and the build-up.

Webbing

Sheet webs in corners, orb webs across paths and eaves, fine webbing across window screens. The most common reason people call.

Egg sacs

Round or oval pale-coloured sacs tucked into webbing or sheltered cavities.

Increased sightings indoors during rain

Wet-season spike is normal in the Top End.

Discarded skins

Spiders moult; you may find discarded shed skins along walls and skirting.

Action Plan

What to Do If You Have Spiders

1

Don't panic. Most Darwin spiders are harmless

Arachnophobia is a recognised fear and a common one; it’s not silly, and it’s a good enough reason on its own to treat.

2

Don't blanket-spray retail products around the kids' rooms

Retail spider sprays are short-acting and patchy. The webbing is back a few weeks later.

3

Book a treatment

We treat the perimeter, eaves, verandahs, window frames, and known webbing zones.

Questions

Common questions about spiders around Darwin and the Top End.

No, most spiders encountered in Darwin homes are not dangerous. The species Northern Rock technicians most often treat are webbing spiders, which are considered a nuisance rather than a threat to human health. If you spot a spider you do not recognise or are concerned about, take a photo from a safe distance and send it to us for identification. Please do not attempt to capture or kill it yourself.
In Darwin, the wet season and the “build-up” drive spiders indoors. As humidity rises and rain hits, spiders move from gardens, eaves, and outdoor structures into the warmer, drier, and more sheltered parts of your home. Northern Rock treatments are designed to cut this indoor “webbing pressure” significantly during these active months.
Northern Rock offers a package treatment that includes a 1-month “webbing-spider-free” service period. Because Top End spider populations are active and can re-colonise quickly from outdoor areas, this window reflects the realistic cycle of spider activity. If webbing returns inside your home within that 1-month period, Northern Rock will return to treat the area at no extra cost.
Yes. The products Northern Rock uses for spider control are safe for occupied homes once dry. Our technicians will always confirm a safe re-entry window with you and can address any specific concerns you have regarding pets or children. Because we target specific “webbing zones” rather than blanket-spraying the entire house, non-target exposure is kept to an absolute minimum.
Yes. Arachnophobia is a recognised and common condition, and it is a frequent reason customers contact Northern Rock. Our technicians treat this with total respect and professionalism. If you prefer not to be on-site while the treatment is being performed, simply let us know when you book, and we will accommodate your request.
No treatment can stop spiders forever, as they are a natural and important part of the Top End garden ecosystem. Outdoor populations will always exist. However, regular Northern Rock treatments (particularly when scheduled before the wet season) keep indoor webbing under control year-round and prevent heavy infestations from establishing.

Webbing taken over the verandah?

Webbing spiders thrive in warm, humid conditions and ramp up significantly through the build-up and the wet season. Outdoor populations grow fast, then push indoors when the rain hits. A treatment timed before or early in the wet season prevents the worst of the webbing from establishing in the first place.
