Pest Profile

Fleas

Fleas are a year-round problem in Darwin and across the Top End, and they get worse during the wet season. They are not just a pet issue. Once a population establishes in carpets, bedding, or yard mulch, they bite humans too, and clearing them takes more than a flea collar.

Flea Species

What Fleas Look Like

Fleas thrive in the warm, humid conditions that define the Top End year-round. The wet season pushes flea populations higher because the humidity and ground moisture extend the flea life cycle and create more breeding habitat in lawns, gardens, and sub-floor spaces.

Cat Flea

The most common flea species on Top End properties. Approximately 1 to 2 mm long, reddish-brown, with long legs built for jumping. Cat Fleas attach to both cats and dogs and frequently bite humans.

Dog Flea

Dark brown to black, turning reddish-black after a blood meal. Feeds on a wide range of mammals including cats, dogs, and humans.

Bird Flea

Brown, spreads quickly between birds. Once birds leave a nest in a roof void or eave, Bird Fleas often migrate indoors looking for a new host.

Warning Signs

Signs of Flea Activity

If you are seeing any of these and over-the-counter pet treatments have not cleared it within a couple of weeks, the population has likely moved off the pet and into the home and yard. That is a treatment situation, not a pet-product situation.

Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively

Often the first sign.

Small, itchy bite clusters on ankles and lower legs

on humans, especially after walking through a carpeted area or sitting on a couch.

Flea dirt

(small black specks of digested blood) in pet bedding, carpet pile, or on light-coloured floors.

Live fleas visible

on a pet’s belly, groin, or base of the tail when you part the fur.

Flea allergy dermatitis

in pets: red, irritated skin and hair loss, especially around the rump and tail base.

Action Plan

What to Do If You Find Fleas

1

Treat the pet first

Talk to your vet about an appropriate flea treatment for your animal. Property treatment alone will not work if the pet keeps re-introducing fleas.

2

Book a property treatment

We treat the interior (carpets, soft furnishings, pet bedding, sub-floor where accessible) and the yard. Our General Pest Control service handles flea-only or flea-as-part-of-a-broader treatment.

3

If you are vacating a rental, use the Tick & Flea Rental Vacate package

Covers internal areas plus yard treatment and is compliant with rental vacate requirements. We provide the report your landlord or property manager needs.

Questions

Common questions about fleas around Darwin and the Top End.

No. Flea infestations are about hosts and habitat, not home hygiene. Fleas commonly hitchhike into homes on pets, humans, or used furniture. Even the cleanest homes in Darwin can experience flea activity if the conditions in the yard or carpet are suitable for their life cycle.
If you or your pets are still getting bitten, the flea population has likely moved from the animal into your home environment, such as carpets, bedding, and garden soil. Treating the pet alone is insufficient; a professional pest control treatment is required to eliminate eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden in the environment.
Yes. Both Cat Fleas and Dog Fleas will bite humans if they are present in the home. Bites typically appear as itchy red clusters around the ankles and lower legs, often occurring after walking through carpeted areas or sitting on infested furniture.
Fleas pose several health risks to cats and dogs, including the transmission of tapeworms and the development of flea allergy dermatitis, which causes intense itching and hair loss. In severe cases, heavy flea infestations can lead to anaemia in young or small animals.
Most Darwin tenancy agreements with pets mandate a professional, documented flea treatment upon vacating the property. Northern Rock provides a specific Tick & Flea Rental Vacate package that covers internal areas and the yard, providing the necessary reporting required by landlords and property managers.
You should observe a significant reduction in flea activity within 24 to 48 hours of treatment. Full clearance typically takes two to three weeks, as residual treatments remain active to eliminate pupae in the environment as they hatch.

Got fleas in the home or yard?

Fleas can transmit tapeworm to pets and cause flea allergy dermatitis, which is one of the most common skin conditions in Top End cats and dogs. Even after treatment, eggs and pupae in the environment can hatch over weeks, which is why a single product application often appears to fail. A proper treatment targets the full life cycle: adults, eggs, larvae, and pupae across both the interior and the yard.
