Pest Profile

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are not a hygiene issue. They spread through travel, second-hand furniture, and shared accommodation, not through dirty homes. The most spotless house can pick them up after a hotel stay or a kerbside mattress find. The good news: a properly executed treatment clears them.

Identification

What Bed Bugs Look Like

Bed bugs travel. They hitchhike in luggage, on clothing, in second-hand furniture, in books and laptop bags. Top End travellers returning from interstate or overseas trips are a common entry point. Share houses, short-stay accommodation, and second-hand mattress purchases are others.

Adults

Roughly the size of an apple seed, around 4 to 5 mm long. Flat, oval body. Reddish-brown when unfed, swollen and darker red after a blood meal. Six legs, prominent antennae.

Eggs

Tiny, pearly white, about 1 mm long. Laid in cracks and crevices in batches.

Nymphs

Smaller, paler versions of the adults. Pass through several moults before reaching adulthood.

Warning Signs

Signs of Bed Bug Activity

Once inside a home, bed bugs hide in cracks, crevices, mattress seams, bed frames, behind loose wallpaper, under carpets, and behind skirting boards. They are nocturnal feeders, drawn to the carbon dioxide a sleeping person exhales.

Bites in a line or cluster

on exposed skin (arms, neck, shoulders, ankles), often noticed in the morning.

Small dark spots

on bedding, mattress seams, or the bed frame: bed bug faeces.

Tiny blood smears

on sheets where a bed bug has been crushed after feeding.

Shed skins

Pale, translucent bed bug exoskeletons in mattress seams or behind the headboard.

A faint sweet, musty odour

in heavy infestations.

Live bugs visible

in mattress seams, bed frame joints, behind the headboard, or under loose wallpaper near the bed.

Action Plan

What to Do If You Find Bed Bugs

From the inspection we recommend an appropriate treatment for the situation.

1

Don't panic and don't move out

Sleeping in a different room or on the couch can spread bed bugs across the property and make treatment harder.

2

Don't bin the mattress on the kerb

It spreads the problem to your neighbours and rarely solves yours.

3

Book a property inspection

We inspect every area bed bugs are known to use: mattress seams, bed frames, cracks in walls, behind loose wallpaper, under carpets, furnishings, behind paintings, and skirting boards.

Questions

Common questions about bed bugs around Darwin and the Top End.

No, bed bugs are not a sign of poor hygiene or a dirty home. They are pests that travel via luggage, second-hand furniture, and shared accommodation, meaning even the most spotless Darwin household can be affected. Bed bugs are attracted to body heat and the carbon dioxide exhaled by sleeping humans rather than food scraps or general household clutter.
Bed bugs most commonly enter homes by hitchhiking on items brought in from outside, such as luggage from hotels, short-stay accommodation, or second-hand furniture like mattresses, couches, and bed frames. They can also be introduced by visiting guests who may unknowingly carry them on their clothing or bags, and they can spread between rooms in shared housing environments.
Bed bug populations can grow rapidly because a single female bed bug is capable of laying several eggs every day, which typically hatch within approximately 10 days. This means that even a minor introduction of a few bugs can escalate into a noticeable and challenging infestation within just a few months.
Attempting to use supermarket sprays is ineffective because bed bugs hide deep within cracks, crevices, and structural gaps that these products cannot reach. Using these sprays often fails to kill the colony and instead drives the bed bugs deeper into the property, making professional extermination much more difficult and time-consuming to achieve.
Whether a bed bug infestation can be resolved in one visit depends entirely on the severity and the specific locations where the bugs are harbouring. While some minor cases are resolved quickly, a professional inspection is required to determine the extent of the activity and whether a follow-up treatment programme is necessary to ensure the property is clear.
To prevent bringing bed bugs home, inspect hotel mattress seams and headboards immediately upon arrival and keep your luggage off the floor and away from the bed. When returning home from a trip, unpack your luggage in a non-bedroom area, wash your travel clothes in a hot cycle, and tumble dry items on high heat if the fabric allows it.

Found bed bugs?

Bed bug treatments vary based on the extent of the infestation, the location of the harbourages, and the property layout. Some situations are best handled with chemical treatment; others suit heat treatment. There is no one-size-fits-all bed bug treatment, which is why we always start with a thorough inspection.
